Fake News

Here’s a Seattle school librarian who is helping her students recognize what information is trustworthy as opposed to, what is now sometimes called, fake news.

Parents can also help with teaching their children this valuable skill.  “Awareness is the key, she said. And it is. Read, listen, watch with an active, questioning mind.”

Treat Yourself to a New Read!

Missing Christmas already?  Librarian and Riverton resident, Nancy Fort, has a wonderful and warm book, written by the same author as Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe — Fannie Flagg.  Nancy recommends, A Redbird Christmas.

I had the great pleasure of picking up my first Fannie Flagg novel over the Christmas holiday.  You may know of her from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes that was based on her novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop CaféA Redbird Christmas has the same type of quirky and lovable characters.  The small town of Lost River, Alabama seems stuck in time where neighbors know each other’s business and the biggest news is the size of a fish caught on the river.  But just like a pebble tossed into a pond, the arrival of a stranger sets off a string of events that change the lives of many of the town’s residents.  Don’t worry, it’s nothing sinister.  Part of the reason I chose this novel was because I needed a light-hearted story during the busy holiday season and this novel fit the bill.  The characters relationships with each other are ideal.  They see each other warts and all but still love and respect each other.  They go out of their way to support each other whenever they are needed.  It really is idyllic.

If you decide to read this book, I suggest that you pick up the audio CD version narrated by Fannie Flagg herself.  Her Southern accent is so sweet and lends another layer to this lovely story.

Library Association Meeting for January 2017

The Annual Meeting of the Riverton Library Board of Trustees, followed by a Regular Meeting took place January 23, 2016, at 7;30 p.m. at the library.

The meeting was called to order by President Kimberly Paulsen, who delivered the President’s Message.

Kim thanked retired Board members Eleanor Paladino and Kenneth Smith for their service and many volunteer hours to the library.  She noted our two successful fundraisers, Cinco de Mayo in May and the Candlelight House Tour in December 2016, and thanked Board members for their contributions, as well as the public for their support of the Riverton Library. The new roof, exterior paint and repair projects are finished, and we have received much positive feedback about our new look.

Jo Horton was elected to fill Eleanor Paladino’s three-year position and William Brown will fill Kenneth Smith’s one year unexpired term.  Board members re-elected to three-year terms are Felicia McCamy, Elaine Mead, Janice Papenberg and Beatrice Horn.  The slate of officers elected is as follows:  President: Kimberly Paulsen, Vice-President: Cathy Martin, Secretary: Beatrice Horn, and Treasurer: Susan Bye.

After a full review of the project, the Board has approved to have a water dispenser installed.

Karen Healey spoke about the up-coming “Paint the Porch Pink” event, sponsored by the Porch Club.  Karen requested the Board contribute $300 toward the purchase of yarn, specifically used to knit breast prostheses called Knitted Knockers, which will be used by the KnitWits library knitting group, to which she belongs.  The group will knit these comfortable and beautiful accessories and offer them, free of charge, the day of the event.  The Board agreed to this contribution.

Our Annual Appeal will begin soon.  We hope you will remember us, and, know that we strive to be a friend to the Riverton-Palmyra community, and never take your support for granted.

Respectfully submitted, Beatrice Horn, RFL Association Board Secretary
