Wicked by Gregory Maguire is the inspiration for the 2003 musical by the same name that has won several Tony Awards and legions of fans. It takes place in the fantastical land of Oz introduced to readers by L. Frank Baum and to moviegoers by Judy Garland. Maguire’s Wicked explores the complex personalities and relationships of the inhabitants of Oz. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the green skinned Wicked Witch of the West before she earned that moniker. The musical is wonderful but the book is even better because it is the first in The Wicked Years series so where the musical ends, the reader can continue to delve into the lives of Glinda, the Munchkins and the Lion. Maguire’s Oz is both fantasy and reality; it goes beyond the Technicolor MGM glitz to reveal the dark motives and underlying political currents that could be the basis for countless novels.  If you are looking for an escape during a cold and wintry day, try Wicked.
